Madrid if you do not live here
There is no cursed district. Centro tops theft stats because Sol–Gran Vía is packed with suitcases, not because it is a war zone. Vallecas or Carabanchel appear in intervention rankings; a visitor rarely needs their side streets at 3 a.m. Salamanca has luxury pickpocketing. Figures move every year.
Where the bag is hunted (and where it is quieter)
| Area | Typical issue |
|---|---|
| Sol, Preciados, Callao, Gran Vía, Plaza Mayor | Pickpockets, a ring of people, phone in hand. |
| Metro Sol / Gran Vía, Atocha, Chamartín | Backpack in front. Case against your leg. |
| El Rastro (Sunday) | Market crowd. Little cash. |
| Lavapiés / Malasaña late | Busy streets fine. Empty side streets at 04:00: plan the way back. |
| Barajas car park | Flat tyre, pirate taxi, QR. |
| Retiro, Madrid Río, Chamberí, much of Salamanca by day | Ordinary big-city pace. Still no iPhone on the terrace table. |
Rates per registered resident inflate Centro: hundreds of thousands of visitors enter every day. Do not use this to brand people who live in Vallecas.
The bag
- In front, zip to the body, not on your back in the metro.
- Phone away while you read the map.
- Terrace: strap on the chair leg, not the street side.
- No “help” with the suitcase on Sol stairs.
Passport: original and copy
Carry a photocopy or a phone photo (and a copy in your own email) day to day. Original in the hotel safe if you trust it, or a second place. Flights and a police report still need the original or a consular emergency paper.
Hotels must log traveller data. Keeping a photocopy of the passport is another matter — the data-protection agency has fined that. You can give the numbers and refuse the photocopy.
Stolen: National Police report + consulate. Insurers want that paper. SATE (city tourist help) can walk you through it. Ask 010 or madrid.es.
Complaints form (hoja de reclamaciones)
Bars, restaurants, hotels and travel agencies in the Region of Madrid must have them. Ask. “We don’t have any” is already a breach. Three copies: them, you, the administration. Not a trial — the form Consumo / Turismo uses later.
Rights visitors often miss
- File a report even without Spanish: denuncias.policia.es or a station. No report, no insurance.
- 112 is free and multilingual. 091 National Police, 092 municipal.
- You need not leave a venue mid-dispute without the complaints form.
- Menu prices must be visible. A “tourist menu” cannot appear only at the bill.
- Licensed taxi with a meter, rank or app — not the arrivals-hall tout.
- Public A&E will see you. EU: EHIC. Others: travel insurance. Ask the price before the “hotel’s clinic”.
- Nobody — including someone in a vest — gets your unlocked phone on the pavement “to check a fine”.
- Cash fine on the spot from an unreadable badge: no. Ask for ID, call 092.
Casi pico. Un vecino me mandó esta ficha. No pagué.
The pattern
Hurry + fake authority + a channel you do not control. Use the app you already have, type .gob.es, call the number on the card.
- Do not tap the SMS link.
- Never dictate an SMS code or paste a seed phrase.
